‘Didn’t even have a chance at life:’ Melbourne neighbors mourn death of 2-year-old in shooting

Police say 2 family members also shot Friday night

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Police still haven’t said who killed a 2-year-old girl and injured two adult relatives during a shooting Friday night at a house on Poplar Lane.

Police were still working an active crime scene on Labor Day but didn’t share much more information as investigators hunt for the killer.

“All of those facts are still under investigation at this point just because of the extremely sensitive nature of the toddler being shot,” Lt. Brian Hart told Brevard County Community Correspondent James Sparvero.

Sparvero had asked Hart if a fourth person in the home was potentially a suspect.

A woman staying at another house on the street called the girl’s death, “just a sad situation.” She did not want her name to be in this story.

“It is heartbreaking just to know that a 2-year-old child, four days prior, just turned 2,” she said. “Didn’t even have a chance at life. That’s what’s disheartening. That’s what’s the saddest part about it.”

Hart said police are getting cooperation from the people they’re talking to.

“We continue to appreciate any community input, and as always, we please ask that they help us,” he said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Melbourne police by calling 321-608-6450 or Crimeline at 800-423-8477 to stay anonymous.
